Stockport Station gets share of £50m DfT fund ….
The Department for Transport will spend £50m fund on improvements at ten railway stations in England, including Stockport, Manchester Victoria, Wigan, Warrington and Crewe.
The fund is a response to a new report called Station Champions on the state of facilities for passengers across the country and identifies the next ten major stations in need of improvement.
Lord Andrew Adonis, transport secretary, said: “I want every station to be a good station – a hub of local community life and somewhere that you wouldn’t mind spending time, with adequate facilities.
“I support the report’s recommendations of minimum standards for stations in terms of information, car and bike parking, facilities and environment. I intend to make these minimum standards a requirement in future rail franchise agreements with train operating companies.”
Please let us have your ideas on what you might spend it on at the station ….

I recently did the Network Rail questionnaire and actually praised Stockport Station. It has everything that I require for what I class as a main line station.
If I want department stores, etc., I don’t go to a Railway Station.
Oh, before anybody asks, what was my other station in the ‘survey’ – it was Altrincham.
No, I did not praise it at all.

I must agree with Morris Minor. If you can change at Stockport rather than go in to Manchester it is much easier. The lifts work between platforms, not much walking, platform waiting rooms, refreshment rooms, you don’t have to pay to use the toilets – a big plus. Use the Stockport money to really try and make a difference at Manchester Victoria.

I used Stockport station earlier this year for the first time for many years. We had to wait for the 87 minute late Crewe departure “steam” special to Scarborough. We have nothing but praise for the station – like Lord Harry we found all this and adjacent parking at a reasonable price for a full day.
It does not need a magic wand waving over it.
