Plans for Altrincham ….

Posted on December 6th, 2009, by The Chairman

A recent meeting in Altrincham Town Hall was given a progress report on plans by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) to improve facilities at Altrincham Interchange, meaning the combined bus, Metrolink and rail stations. The work carried out over the past summer is being regarded as Phase 1 of the much wider scheme to completely rebuild the bus station, to provide a single ticket/information office for all three modes of transport and to provide a new footbridge across the rail/Metrolink station with lifts to improve access for the mobility-impaired.

Phase 2 is scheduled to include demolition of the existing station footbridge and its replacement by the new bridge. Work on this phase is due to start in early 2011 with completion in late 2013. The existing station building on platform 1 is to be retained for café/retail use. A new building is to be provided north of this structure to serve the rebuilt Interchange. There will be improved access to Moss Lane via a new ramp from the bus station. There will also be an integrated and coordinated approach to management and customer service at the Interchange.

One area in definite need of improvement is the interface between rail and Metrolink in terms of timetable co-ordination to provide good connections; the current policy is not to hold either trains or trams for passengers who wish to connect between the two when both are in the station.

We have looked to find a “hot link” to the plans so you can look at them on line, but it appears they are not on GMPTE’s web site.

Please let us know what you think should be improved at Altrincham, either by posting a comment to this post, or by sending an email to me at john.oates@mcrua.org.uk

Perhaps this document (albeit slightly out of date with timescales) gives more information – http://www.altrincham-electric.org.uk/html/AltrinchamStrategicBrief.doc

  2. Jason Chase Says:

Has anyone else noticed the ‘park and ride’ sign, painted on the floor by the bus stop in Altrincham station’s car park, actually says ‘KISS and ride’?

  3. C. Bazley Says:

They’d better not knock down the Altrincham footbridge or else I will be having several angry phonecalls.

There is nothing wrong with the present bridge and there is ground level disabled access already. It will destroy part of the beautiful canopy.

I shall be talking to English Heritage about this matter.
