Metrolink trams starting test running on the Altrincham line

I hear today from Andrew that a 3000 series new tram ventured onto the Altrincham line. I understand that up until now they have only been test running between the depot at Queen’s Road and Bury.

Here’s a picture I took on my phone of 3001 progressing down Mosley Street late lunchtime. It may be this was on that run!

  1. Uther Pendragon Says:

The great experiment at gauging took place recently with the new tram to check the bridges. The tram was fitted with a polystyrene nose cone and proceeded at 5 mph to check all the bridges. Fine so far! The cone was then removed and the tram proceeded at a much faster rate as the line speed is 50 mph. Result – bridge bash – they forgot that at speed it not only sways from side to side but also up and down. A professional firm was contacted this week to properly gauge the bridges as it was not done after the track had been relayed.

I know all this from an insider!

It does make you wonder about the competence of the management – Oldham and Rochdale watch out.

Competence of the management will always be a question that is going to be asked after the saga from August and September.
