Cable Thieves in Cheshire ….
Posted on February 10th, 2010, by The Chairman
Many of you are aware that one of the biggest problems underlying reliability that the railway is having to cope with these days is metal thieves stealing signalling cables.
Here’s an article published recently by our friends in The Middlewich Guardian.
If you spot anything suspicious on the railway, ring British Transport Police on

One of our members, concerned about the effect the continuing cable thefts might have on the viability of the line through Middlewich, recently wrote to Network Rail.
He received the following positive response: -
“Dear xxxxxx
I have been passed you message of 11 February 2010 regarding cable theft from the railway at Middlewich.
There is little if any regular, booked traffic over this route – one freight train per day on occasion. We are suffering from cable theft and pending resolution of that persistent problem, it has proved appropriate to provide a pilotman for the occasional train that does require to use the branch.
Notwithstanding that, we are looking to restore the signalling equipment as this is a key diversionary route and we are looking to install sensors on the fibre optic network to combat cable theft, along with a number of other mitigations.
I trust this is helpful.
Yours sincerely
