Cycle Points ….

Posted on July 12th, 2010, by The Chairman

We’ve been a bit (a lot!) slow in the UK in following the cycling examples set by a number of our northern European neighbours – Sweden, Belgium and Holland come to mind.

But now, the new impressive cycle point at Leeds is about to open.

Elsewhere in the UK, there are variations on the cycle point theme.

Here’s a part of Transport for London’s cycle storage facilities at Euston.

The paper notices are from British Transport Police warning users to lock their bikes securely to the racks following a spate of thefts.

And not to be outdone …. here’s the latest facilities at Mobberley! These date from the 50s or earlier – does anyone know when?

They regularly operate above 100% capacity, but we like our “heritage” bike racks.

If you see other good examples whilst out and about, please send your pictures in.

Here’s one sent by David Miller of Cuddington’s extensive “cycle storage facilites”! See comment below.

I have a BLUC membership and mainly use the lockers at Altrincham, Navigation Road, Stockport Rail and Stockport Bus.

I find these very useful. I don’t need to carry a heavy lock, just a standard padlock.

The lockers in Stockport Bus Station are full of litter and smell of urine, but I feel my bike’s safe.

  2. David Miller Says:

Maybe it was your publicity for the Mobberley “cycle storage facility” or the start of the school holidays but there were four bikes there on Wendesday.

Cuddington has even more capacity but rarely more than one user.

If you want to know what facilities there are at any station, not just for bikes and with emphasis on access for the disabled, see the NRES web site: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/

Apparently Mobberley has six racks, but the picture is not very flattering for the garden!

When I was passing through Adlington (Lancs) yesterday, I am sure there was a sign by the bike rack (empty) saying it was for rail users only, which seems a bit petty if not totally unnecessary.

Seriously, have the designers at last realised that cyclists don’t want to return to their bikes to find a wet saddle? Leeds suggests yes, Euston looks like no, for Cuddington, it is pretty obvious. (See picture added above!)
