Train usage figures for April 2010 to March 2011 have just been released by the Office of Rail Regulation. Here are the figures for our lines, Crewe-Liverpool line first …. Crewe-Liverpool sees increases of 18-26%. Very healthy. Just imagine what it might be if the car parks still had spaces after 7am! Most Mid Cheshire […]

The Big Scrub! ….

Posted on March 29th, 2012, by The Chairman

It’s started! We’ve been complaining about the filthy external state of many of Northern’s units, particularly the class 150s and class 156s, for at least the last couple of years. Here from April 2010 is our post on Northern’s Dirty Diesels and from August 2011 Northern Comes Clean, which turned out to be a bit […]

Sally, our Community Rail Officer, writes …. On 27 March at a very sunny 9.15am Norman Baker, Transport Minister opened the new Brompton Dock at Piccadilly Station. The new 40 bike facility means that people can hire a shiny new Brompton for a day, a week or several months …. ideal for travelling on trains at peak times […]

Chester to Wrexham line to be double tracked again ….

Posted on March 20th, 2012, by The Chairman

Great news! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-north-east-wales-17437506 This line was singled in the 1970s to make the “Wrexham Bypass” cheaper to build with the provision needed of a single track rather than double track bridge over the bypass at the top of Gresford Bank, as well as a smaller bridge between the turnoff for Rossett and Rossett itself. Since […]

Bache …. Baitch or Bark? ….

Posted on March 19th, 2012, by The Chairman

It’s quite confusing. I used to live in Chester, so I know which it is! When leaving our trains at Chester on platform 6, it’s a short walk to the Merseyrail mainly quarter-hourly service up the Wirral and on to Liverpool. The announcements are clear, and they say the first station out of Chester is […]

Fare dodging not helping overcrowding ….

Posted on March 16th, 2012, by The Chairman

There’s an interesting “Letter of the Month” in March’s Railnews. It’s almost 4MB to download, but it’s worth it! Railnews Piccadilly On the Mid Cheshire Line, whilst there is no doubt fare dodging, we think the greater problem is passengers wanting to buy tickets, but it being difficult for them to buy them. This seems […]

Our visit to Newton Heath ….

Posted on March 15th, 2012, by The Chairman

Some of you may remember that last September/October I spoke at Northern’s Engineering Conferences in York. They asked me to go along and let them know about their product – trains, performance, cleanliness – from a user’s perspective, “warts and all”. I told them, the good, the bad and the ugly! The engineers seemed to […]

Our new Parkeon Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) ….

Posted on March 5th, 2012, by The Chairman

As it was sunny this morning, I thought it would be a good time to go out for pictures of our two new ticket vending machines (TVMs) along the line. Arriving at Northwich on time, here’s the new TVM in the background seen with 142062 waiting to leave and with our “hump” alongside the unit. […]

Hale’s Re-Roofing almost finished? ….

Posted on March 4th, 2012, by The Chairman

It looks like the scaffolding will be coming down on the “Up” side (Manchester-bound) at Hale Station very shortly. As you can see in this and the following pictures taken last Friday, the slating on the old signalbox is completed, and through the currently-glassless canopy you can see the slating on the roof of the […]
