Two new substations providing additional power and resilience across the Metrolink tram network – enabling more vehicles to run – are set to be installed as part of a multi-million pound improvement package. Preparation works for the substations, which are being built on Metrolink park and ride sites at Brooklands and Whitefield, began on Wednesday 29 March.
To accommodate the works, from Monday 3 April, 25 parking spaces at Brooklands will be temporarily out of use. Following the works, which will take between six and eight weeks’ to complete, there will be 10 fewer parking spaces at Brooklands.
This work will enable more double trams to work on the Altrincham line.
Along with a recently installed wheel lathe at Trafford depot, a new ‘turnback’ at Sale and 16 additional trams, which are now running on the network, the £44m improvement package will enhance the capability of the network, increase resilience and improve operational reliability.
On Sunday 30 April and Monday 1 May and on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May there will be some changes to Metrolink services to allow for parts of the work to be completed.
Further details will be available on the Metrolink website nearer the time.
