Roy Chapman of TfGM (who helped us back in 1990 with our original studies into putting a passenger service back onto the line through Middlewich) coordinates events for the Institute of Railway Operators in the North West & North Wales.

Here’s details of their latest event next Wednesday from Duncan Law, Network Rail’s Northern Hub Scheme Sponsor. All are welcome.

Roy says “The next event is a presentation on the Northern Hub, by Duncan Law, Scheme Sponsor, Network Rail. The Government recently announced funding for the long-awaited Ordsall Chord, first proposed way back in 1980. In addition, equally long-awaited aspirations for extensions to electrification are at last proceeding, with work underway on the Manchester – Liverpool via Chat Moss line, to be followed by the Bolton – Preston – Blackpool Corridor and only announced this week, the much needed Trans-Pennine route via Huddersfield.

“Within the above context, what will the Northern Hub mean for the railways of this Region?

“To find out attend this important event. The date is 7 December. Details are attached – but note that this is a joint event with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, and a different venue and that there will be no refreshments in advance.”

For those interested in the detail from those “who really know”, sounds like a “Must”!

Organised by Niki Abnett, from Virgin Trains at Stockport, the event raised over £800 for this worthwhile charity.

Attending the event was Sally Buttifant, CRP Officer of the Mid Cheshire Line, John Kenny CRP Officer for the Crewe-Manchester Line and John Hulme – a member of both Partnerships and Vice Chairman of MCRUA.

John said “We were very pleased to support our friends at Stockport Station at this worthwhile event. Not only did it help raise money for a very good cause but it allowed us to promote our two local railway lines to the many people who came along”.

The Mayor of Stockport Borough Council, Councillor Les Jones and his wife Jackie was in attendance to thank those supporting the event. Stockport Borough Council support both Community Rail Partnerships.

Also there, in bay Platform was Virgin Class 57 Thunderbird, Virgil Tracy and many visitors to the Station were surprised to see the Mayor in the driver seat.

Whilst the Mayor and his wife enjoyed looking at the model railway layouts, inspecting old books and railway memorabilia and meeting those at the event, he made the comment, whilst getting off the locomotive, that he never expected to be an engine driver in his year of office!

Member, Peter Kolker, tells us about an upcoming meeting in Goostrey seeking views on a topic which is open for general consultation, namely the High Speed Rail (HS2) project. There may also be a discussion on rail transport generally.

This is a Congleton Constituency Conservative Party Forum (CPF) meeting. We are assured that the CPF meetings are run on a non political basis and attendance is open to any member of the public, that they exist to discuss topics of interest and are based on subjects which are of medium and long term interest for Government policy. The discussions are based on answering a number of questions, the answers to which are fed directly to the relevant Minister.

The meeting is to be held in Goostrey Village Hall, Lounge on Thursday 9th June at 8.00pm. Briefing papers and questionnaire can be found on the HS2 Consultation website.

If you’d like to attend, please let Peter Kolker know on plkolker(at)aol.com or ring him on 01477 533834. There is no charge for attending.

Out of interest, the MCRUA Committee has not discussed a policy on HS2 as such. As none of us live in the Chilterns, perhaps the concept is a “no brainer” and in due course we’ll be turning our thoughts to the detail.

Sally writes:

Last night the Mid Cheshire train took some passengers back in time to Cranford also known as Knutsford! Those booked on the Cranford train enjoyed wine and juice on the outward journey and met Cranford guides at Knutsford Heritage Centre for a guided tour around the town to find out more about the life and works of Elizabeth Gaskell. After the tour there was time for questions and refreshments before a leisurely stroll back to the station to catch the train back to Chester.

(c) Sally Buttifant

On the return journey there was a fun quiz and the opportunity to find out more about Mid Cheshire Line attractions & events on Mid Cheshire trains.

(c) Sally Buttifant

Everyone felt that the evening was excellent and we hope to run a similar event over the summer. Check out our CRP website for further details.
