Leaf fall arrangements improve ….

Posted on October 9th, 2010, by The Chairman

Our “leaf fall trains” (Rail Head Treatment Trains – RHTTs) start running next week. On our line we have a policy of “water-jetting” only, following (for those interested) a “wrong side” track circuit failure at Northenden last year caused by the Sandite gel being used.

RHTT approaching Cuddington - (c) David Miller

Those good at taking pictures may find the diagrams interesting – see the end of this post. If you get a good picture, please send it in, so we can publish it.

New this year are Traction Gel Applicators (TGAs), also known as Static Sandite Applicators. These apply track gel (Sandite) as the trains pass. These are all now commissioned; their details are below. Again if you get a good picture of one of these (without trespassing), we’d be delighted to have it for the Blog.

With performance figures continuing at record levels, let’s hope these revised arrangements combine to make them even better!

  1. David Miller Says:

Attached is the best shot I could get of the RHTT this afternoon. If I had waited until it got any nearer, I would have missed the 1526 to Mouldsworth running in behind me.

It looks as though it is doing its stuff where it is needed, although when you look at all those leaves waiting to fall, it appears rather puny.

The other three photos are more interesting. I took them at Mouldsworth about 30 minutes later of rails that had not been used since the RHTT had been over them. So is it really doing its stuff?

(Ed! – the pictures have been inserted into the post, above).

Sorry leaf 3 is a bit blurred – I had to take it at 1/20 second.

  2. Insider Says:

This RHTT is “doing its stuff”.

A trains’ wheels normally only come into contact with a small portion of the rail head surface (and side of the rail head – the gauge corner) and consequently the jets are aligned to this central portion – where you see the brighter section on the railhead surface.

The jets don’t wash the entire width of the railhead (normally about 2 inches wide).

  3. The Chairman Says:

Hopefully, not long to go for “leaf fall” now.

This year the RHTT methodology has been changed, the train both high pressure water jets and then lays down a trail of Sandite. At junctions there’s no Sandite, as an accumulation can cause track circuits to fail, showing a line as “occupied” when it isn’t and potentially causing signals to “turn red”.

This season also has been the first since the national initiative to fit sanders to all Pacers and class 15x units, meaning all our trains now have sanding equipment. We saw an example on a class 156 during our Allerton visit – https://www.mcrua.org.uk/chairmansblog/2012/10/19/our-visit-to-allerton-depot/

Traincrew tell me “leaf fall” on our line has not been as bad as in previous years.

We’re not out of it yet, but a couple more week and we should be.

  4. Nodding Donkey Says:

At last something positive on Mid Cheshire Line train running “leaf fall on our line has not been as bad as in previous years” and the fitting of sanding equipment to the units. Well done to both Network Rail and Northern on this occasion
Goodness knows how bad it could have been coupled with crew shortages, faulty units, obstacles on the track, cable problems etc. etc. which have been experienced recently.
