Altrincham Interchange Update ….

Posted on November 16th, 2012, by The Chairman

Andrew Macfarlane writes ….

The detailed design has now been completed for the Interchange and Transport for Greater Manchester (formerly known as GMPTE) is in the process of discharging its pre-commencement planning conditions together with its rail approvals for the scheme. TfGM is in the final stages of identifying a contractor for the £19 million scheme and this process is expected to be concluded before the end of the year.

Subject to the successful outcome of the procurement process for a contractor and the appropriate rail approvals, work could start on site in late 2012. TfGM is however aware of the sensitivities of work commencing around Christmas and should any works be undertaken during that period they will have no measurable impact on passengers or services.

The works will commence with a “soft” start, which will minimise the impact on passengers and ensure that the bus station remains operational for as long as possible into early 2013. During this period the works will be focused on the station building and canopy on platform 1. We understand that the plan is for the booking office to be temporarily relocated to the office on platform 4 and for the trams to use platform 2 during this period. Once the bus station closes, to enable major demolition and construction works to commence, buses will be relocated to temporary stops adjacent to the Interchange on Stamford New Road, Barrington Road, Victoria Street and Stamford Street. The works to the Interchange are due for completion in 2014.

Have we an update on this scheme? Has the ‘soft start’ commenced?
Not noticed anything myself, but I’ve only seen the station from Stamford New Road since Christmas.

    Hi, Mike!

I heard last Friday that the scheme has not yet commenced as TfGM have yet to appoint the contractors. Hopefully, they’ll be appointed soon.
