Northern the only TOC to repay subsidy! ….

Yes, it’s in Modern Railways so it must be true.

According to the very well informed Roger Ford in December 2012’s issue, Northern is the only English TOC to be doing sufficiently well that it had to repay some of its subsidy (called “Revenue Share”) to the DfT.

Northern is the largest TOC in England and unsurprisingly has the largest figure for “Net Support” at £456.4m. Second largest to my surprise is South Eastern with all their new trains at £331.3m. Also high in their level of support are a number of other “Network South East” operators with London Midland on £202.5m and Southern on £174.4m.

There is, shall we say, more than a little dark irony in Northern being the only TOC repaying part of its subsidy under the regime… Still, who needs investment, eh?

As ever with Roger’s articles, there’s loads of detail in there. Not to be missed!
