Michael Portillo spotted on the Mid Cheshire line! ….

Posted on January 9th, 2013, by The Chairman

Member Dave Hoolihan was a little surprised one Friday afternoon before Christmas to find himself on the 1719 Stockport to Navigation Road section sitting opposite someone who looked remarkably like Michael Portillo.

The conversation went something like this ….

“Excuse me, do I recognise you from somewhere?”

The Michael Portillo lookalike holds out his hand and says in a booming voice. “Hello, I’m Michael Portillo, pleased to meet you.”

Yes, it was the real Michael Portillo sampling the delights of one of our class 142s on his way towards Chester.

Anyone know where he was going?

  1. Andrew Macfarlane Says:

I don’t know but tonight he’s going from Stoke to Winsford (via Crewe Works?) on BBC2 at 18.30.

  2. Robert Taggart Says:

MDXP – a fine presenter of a fine series.
Question. Regarding the development / promotion of the Mid Cheshire line – can he still ‘pull strings’ ?
Quite a come-down from the heady-heights of Cabinet government.
Question. Has he undergone the most public mid-life crisis in recorded history ?!

  3. Community Rail Officer Says:

Michael Portillo did use our line one Friday – Fri 19th Oct – he came in to Knutsford on a 142 to attend the Knutsford Literary Festival where he was speaking. He is an excellent speaker both re his political career and his rail career.

I met him again this January in London when he gave young people from Northwich and Winsford their own personal guided tour around St Pancras and Kings Cross – he was brilliant and gave his time freely. More of this exciting rail heritage project to follow!

  4. Jen Says:

I wonder how many current and former Conservative MPs, apart from Portillo, have travelled on Pacer trains.

I remember seeing on the news when David Cameron came up to visit Northern Rail’s Newton Heath depot they arranged a refurbished class 156 to take him and his delegates between Piccadilly station and Newton Heath. I think they should have given them a Merseytravel class 142 that hadn’t been cleaned and made him travel between Liverpool Lime Street and Newton Heath on it so he could experience what rail travel is quite often like with Northern Rail.

  5. The Chairman Says:

The comments that were here about whether Baguley or Middlewich were “shovel ready” under the Government’s recently-announced £20m scheme have been moved to a more appropriate home – https://www.mcrua.org.uk/chairmansblog/2013/02/04/hs2-plans-strengthen-case-for-reopening-of-middlewick-link/

  6. Jen Says:

Michael Portillo is filming for a new rail series in the area this week and next. He’s been spotted in Manchester, Warrington and on the Wirral over the last couple of days.

  7. Mike Battman Says:

Yes, he was spotted on Victoria Station on 30th April, Oxford Road the day before and is due at Wigan Wallgate today.
